Timber Frame Design - The Process |
Concept After an initial meeting with the client to establish the brief, a 3D model of the frame design will be created based on approved planning drawings. It is generally recommended that this model is viewed on screen. This is the best way to appreciate how the frame works. However, if this is not possible for any reason, Cullen Timber Design can issue fully rendered, perspective views of the frame, together with dimensioned floor plans, elevations and sections. In addition, the 3D model can be exported in an HTML format for viewing, in full 3D, on the client's own computer. This can be sent on CD, DVD or via an e-mail attachment.
Drawings for client approval When the overall concept has been approved, Cullen Timber Design will issue a series of 2D drawings showing the floor plans of each storey, as many elevations as necessary, ceiling and roof plans, and relevant sections through the building which the client will be asked to either amend or sign off as approved. These will be annotated to show timber sizes where appropriate. In addition a full window and door schedule will be produced so that joinery items - which can have long lead times - an be ordered in good time.

Verification from structural engineer The drawings mentioned above will form the basis of those issued to the structural engineer for production of the frame's structural calculations. As soon as approval has been received from the engineer, cutting lists can be issued and orders for timber can be placed. The software will automatically produce cutting lists which can be rounded up in section size and length and can also be easily length optimised for efficient timber procurement.
Manufacturing drawings / machine files At this stage, full workshop/manufacturing drawings can be issued to all relevant individuals and organisations. Typically this might include, timber framers or panel manufacturers. If it is planned for some or all of the frame to made by machine, then the machine files are created and these can be tweaked where necessary before being issued to the manufacturer.
Assembly drawings Finally, a full set of assembly drawings are issued for use by the erection team. This will include accurate and fully dimensioned sole plate layouts as well as individual wall drawings and layouts of the ceilings and roof areas. In addition, the assembly drawings will include a series of hidden line perspective drawings of the frame to assist with the erection. |
