Self Build

The decision to build your own home is a large and significant one.  If you decide to choose timber frame as your method of construction, you are faced with a range of additional decisions.

An integral part of the design process, Cullen Timber Design provides a 3D computer generated version of the modelled building which clients can view on their own computers using the freely available and easy to use Google Sketchup software. Providing this service ensures that clients are fully aware of the characteristics of the structure of the frame from early on in the design process in a highly visual way.  This offers our clients the possibility to refine and amend their design as the frame evolves to ensure their particular requirements are fully met.

Having decided upon the design of your frame, Cullen Timber Design is in a unique position to offer advice on which method of manufacture is most appropriate for your build. Through liaising with a range of timber frame manufacturers on your behalf, we are in a position to help you achieve the most competitive quotes for the supply of your frame.

The majority of frames we design, whether softwood or green oak, are manufactured using sophisticated CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machinery.  Using this precise manufacturing technology ensures the production of an accurate pre-cut frame as well as the implementation a variety of techniques which can speed up the erection of the frame on site.

For example, in softwood frames, it is possible to notch the sole and wall plates to accept the studs thus keeping on site measurement and potential errors to an absolute minimum. If increased flexibility is required, notches can be replaced with markers on the plates.  These show where the studs are to be located but would allow for a certain degree of alteration.  Similarly, joist binders or perimeter beams within the floor and the ridge plates could also be marked or notched, again with a view to simplifying and speeding up the erection process.

The manufacture of oak frames using this method also means that all complex joint details are pre-designed and are pre-cut before the components arrive on site enabling frame erectors to work efficiently to erect your frame.

Cullen Timber Design approaches timber framing using the best and most appropriate technology to support the design process. Because of our systematic approach to design, we are able to generate highly useful and relevant data from the computer generated 3D model that will assist you in many ways during your build.  For example, we are able to generate data linked to the area of the roof surfaces and lines which will enable you to get accurate prices from roofing contractors.  The provision of such information enables costly errors to be avoided and is provided free of charge for our clients.
